SOPA Has Been Shelved – The Internet is Free!

I am very, very pleased to say that the infamous SOPA bill has been shelved by congress after the White House spoke out against it. Until now, the White House had been silent on this issue. But finally, almost at the last minute, Obama’s administration spoke out against it, effectively causing the U.S. Congress to shelf the bill. Internet users can rejoice – the internet will remain free and uncensored! …for now.

The Obama Administration created a blog post about the SOPA bill, which you can read on the White House Blog website.

While we believe that online piracy by foreign websites is a serious problem that requires a serious legislative response, we will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet.

Nobody can say for certain what we will see in the future. The SOPA bill has not been completely killed – simply tucked away for the time being. Will we see it rise again in the future? After Obama’s presidency, perhaps?

For now we can rejoice in the internet’s freedom and lack of censorship, but I think we should all stay alert and be prepared for a similar proposal in the future.
